LETHBRIDGE – Nearly a full year after a police standoff on the south side – during which the Lethbridge Tactical Team deployed CS gas to clear a house – a 45-year old Lethbridge man has admitted to drug and weapons charges.

After entering his pleas, Eldon Jon Myers was handed a three-year prison sentence as part of a joint submission from the Crown and defence.

An investigation into drug trafficking and the possession of firearms, led police to conduct surveillance and eventually execute a search warrant on May 26, 2016, at a home along the 800 block of 6 Street South.

Twelve people were inside the home at the time, and most came out on their own without incident, however, several others remained inside, prompting authorities to bring in the tactical unit.

After several hours of negotiation, police used the CS gas, forcing Myers and three others outside where they were arrested. A search of the home turned up one more woman who was hiding under a bed.

During their investigation, police found a bag in the home that contained 17 firearms and crossbows. They also discovered various drugs, including crack cocaine, methamphetamine, LSD, heroin and oxycodone, along with a large amount of stolen jewelry, tools and electronics.

It was noted that police were able to identify some of the owners and return the property.

After reading in the agreed statement of facts, Crown Prosecutor Erin Olsen stated that Myers has a long history of related crimes that stretches back nearly 30-years, calling his record “horrendous”. She added that if not for the guilty plea, the Crown likely would have been seeking five years following a conviction at trial.

Olsen also pointed out that Myers was under a firearms prohibition when police recovered the weapons.

As part of Myer’s sentence, he was given a lifetime ban on possessing firearms. He was also given credit for 300 days of pretrial custody, leaving him with two years and 65-days left on his sentence.
