Latest efficiency program offering instant rebates

CALGARY – The latest component of the province’s energy efficiency program is aimed at encouraging people to replace things like light bulbs and faucets in their own homes.

A list of products, from power bars to clotheslines, will be eligible for an instant rebate at the register, when purchased at a participating store. According to the Energy Efficiency Alberta website, for example, a standard LED light bulb, sold individually, will include a $3 rebate. A low flow shower head will have savings of $12.

There will be limits of 25 units purchased at one time. More than 580 stores across Alberta are taking part, including major chains like Walmart, Canadian Tire, and Home Hardware.

Environment minister Shannon Phillips said they’ll be looking at how to improve the program during the initial six-week period.

“We will be able to respond to the market demand — more of these types of programs, or adding some products as we go along. We wanted to have this kind of ‘starter kit’ program,” Phillips told a news conference at a Canadian Tire location in Calgary.

Monica Curtis, CEO of Energy Efficiency Alberta, said the program is working with reputable companies, and has other checks to ensure that the rebates are flowing through to the consumers by monitoring sales, supply, and manufacturing data.

The government is also hiring more than 100 ambassadors to be posted in stores to offer help to customers.

The rebates will be available for six weeks starting Friday, April 28, and again in the fall.
