U of L researcher receives federal grant
LETHBRIDGE – A University of Lethbridge professor has been named a Canada Research Chair by the federal government.
Dr. Athanasios Zovoilis of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry was named a Tier II chair in the field of RNA Bioinformatics and Genomics. The program will provide Zovoilis with $500,000 in research funding, as well as $53,000 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, to go towards lab tools and equipment.
Zovoilis came from Harvard University to the U of L to study the development personalized disease treatment. Cancer and dementia are among the targets of his work which he hopes to incorporate in a testing program in Alberta.
He has a background in molecular genetics, using DNA sequencing to find gene mutations.
