Accused in Walsh Drive standoff makes first court appearance

LETHBRIDGE – The 42-year old man arrested following a standoff with Lethbridge Police on the west side on Wednesday (May 24) is facing a number of charges.

Daniel Desmond Crowder is accused of breaching probation, failing to comply with a probation order, utterings threats causing death or bodily harm and possession of body armour without a valid permit.

He made a brief appearance in Lethbridge Provincial Court Thursday morning (May 26), and the matter was adjourned to May 30.

The incident started to unfold around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, when police responded to a request to check on the well-being of a man at an apartment complex in the 2500 block of Walsh Drive West, regarding comments made on social media.

The man refused to speak with officers, and as a precaution, part of the apartment complex was evacuated and the roads were barricaded.

Police noted that additional “concerning comments online” prompted them to bring in the Critical Incident Response Team – including the Tactical Team, Explosive Disposal Unit and Crisis Negotiator.

Then, just after 4 p.m., officers could be seen escorting an individual from the apartment building and taking him into custody.

A search of the apartment unit also turned up body armour, which is prohibited, but no weapons were discovered.

Crowder remains in custody.
