River search at Medicine Hat cancelled due to unsafe conditions

MEDICINE HAT – The search operation to find the body of a man who went missing in the South Saskatchewan River has been cancelled.

According to Constable Shane Ryan of the Redcliff RCMP, the operation has been postponed as of Monday, June 5 due to unsafe weather and river conditions. Ryan indicated that the flow rate of the river has become too fast, along with increased mud and debris in the water.

The postponement comes after the operation’s dramatic weekend. On Friday evening, the Medicine Hat Fire Department had found some promising sonar signs, which led to three dives in points of interest on Saturday.

However, the dives failed to find the body.

Ryan said that the searchers will get back on the water, once conditions improve. No aerial searches are planned, due to weather conditions, and the base of operations at the Strathcona Park boat launch will be cleared out.

In a statement sent out by the Redcliff RCMP, the family of the missing man expressed their appreciation for those working on the search, as well as thanking people for their support.

“In particular, they wish to thank Search and Rescue, the RCMP, the Fire Department, Victim Services from Medicine Hat and Redcliff, the Red Cross, Days Inn, all Civilian Volunteers and Kelly Fischer for going above and beyond to help search for our son,” read the statement.

“Emergency Services would also like to thank members of the public for their thoughts for everyone involved, especially the family. It is important to emphasize that this search is not finished, and that further efforts will be made once environmental conditions improve along the river to enable a safer search.”

Ryan also said the man’s family will be returning home to British Columbia Monday.
