SOURCE: OMAR KHADR ALREADY PAID $10.5 MILLION

The federal government has paid former Guantanamo Bay inmate Omar Khadr $10.5 million as part of a deal to settle his long-standing lawsuit over violations of his rights, The Canadian Press has learned. A source familiar with the situation says the Liberal government made the payment to get ahead of an attempt by two Americans to enforce a massive U.S. court award against Khadr in Canadian court.

PACKED DAY FOR PM TRUDEAU AT G-20 SUMMIT

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his fellow G20 leaders get down to business today at their summit in Hamburg, Germany. He will take part in a pair of working sessions and hold bilateral meetings the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, most of the interest is focused on a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

UNRULY PASSENGER FORCES FLIGHT BACK TO MONTREAL

A Sunwing Airlines flight bound for Cuba returned to Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport last under a fighter jet escort due to an “unruly customer” who made what an airline spokeswoman says were “non-specific threats.” The unidentified man was arrested once the plane was back in Montreal. A NORAD says two U.S. Air Force F-15 jets escorted the plane back after intercepting it near Albany, N.Y.

LATEST JOBLESS DATA COMING TODAY

We will find out today whether the economy continued to add jobs last month when Statistics Canada releases its labour force survey. The last report showed robust job growth in May, with a net gain of more than 54,000 positions. That included a surge of 77,000 full-time jobs to make up for a downturn in part-time work. But the unemployment ticked up to 6.6 per cent as more people entered the labour market.

BAIL DECISION TODAY FOR MAN CHARGED IN WIFE’S DEATH

A Montreal man charged with murdering his wife in a suspected compassion killing will find out today if he will be granted bail. Michel Cadotte was charged in February with second-degree murder, one day after his wife, Jocelyne Lizotte, was discovered in cardiac arrest at a long-term care facility. On the day of his wife’s death, he wrote on Facebook he had consented to a request for assisted death, had “cracked,” and was waiting for police.

SENTENCING TODAY FOR WOMAN WHO HID INFANT BODIES

Lawyers will argue today over what sentence should be imposed on a woman convicted of concealing the bodies of six infants in a Winnipeg storage locker. Andrea Giesbrecht faces a sentencing hearing, five months after she was found guilty of hiding the remains inside a U-haul storage unit she had rented. She was arrested in October 2014 after she defaulted on paying rent for the unit.

ST. JOHN’S MARKING 125 YEARS SINCE ‘THE GREAT FIRE’

St. John’s is set to mark 125 years since “The Great Fire” of July 8, 1892, burned down much of Newfoundland’s commercial centre and left 11,000 people homeless. The fire was blamed on a dropped tobacco pipe or match in a stable up on a hill overlooking the city. St. John’s is marking the anniversary this weekend with walking tours and events in Bannerman Park.
