Toronto army reservist faces seven counts of voyeurism

OTTAWA — The Canadian military has laid seven charges of voyeurism against a full-time army reservist in Toronto.

A military spokesman says the charges against Master Warrant Officer Mardie Reyes come after someone allegedly videorecorded fellow service members in secret at two local armouries.

The recordings were purportedly made in a women’s washroom at Denison Armoury, and in a changing room at Moss Park Armoury, between May 2012 and June 2016.

That is when the recording device was found, sparking an investigation.

Officials say Reyes is a 26-year military veteran who deployed twice to Afghanistan and once to the Philippines in November 2013 to help with relief efforts following Typhoon Haiyan.

The case is being handled through the military justice system, including a potential court martial.

Defence chief Gen. Jonathan Vance has promised a zero-tolerance approach to sexual misconduct in the ranks, including possible release for those who are found guilty of such behaviour.
