Southern Alberta winter storm forces Hamlet of Burdett to issue boil water advisory

BURDETT – A boil water advisory has been issued for the Hamlet of Burdett, which is part of County of Forty Mile No. 8 located between Lethbridge and Medicine Hat.

Water may be unsafe to drink or use as a result of the effect the intense winter storm had in the area.

Utilities Manager Stewart Payne says the winter storm that they had caused some electrical issues in the control building at the pump house in Burdett.

“That resulted in a loss of pressure in the town this morning, and a loss of pressure in a distribution system means there’s a potential for a cross connection infiltration which requires the boil water advisory.”

Payne says crews are actively working to resolve this issue right now.

“The pressure has been restored, it was restored just before 11 a.m. Tuesday morning, and crews are on site flushing the distribution and taking samples,” Payne said. “Once those samples come back from Alberta Health Services as clean, then the boil water advisory can be lifted.”

When asked whether this is a short term issue, Payne said yes but added testing could take a little longer.

“There’s a timing issue with the samples, so if we can’t get them in today it’ll be tomorrow and it takes a full 24 hours to do the testing. So we may or may not know until Friday or Saturday whether or not we’re OK to lift the advisory,” Payne added.

In the meantime, county officials are asking people to make sure to boil their water, bringing it to a rapid rolling boil for one minute prior to use.
