Election results from around southern Alberta

Lethbridge County:

A few new faces will be joining the table at Lethbridge County Council.

In Division 1, Lorne Hickey was re-elected with 119 votes. In Division 2, Tory Campbell defeated incumbent Michael Willms by grabbing 181 votes. Another incumbent, Henry Doeve, was taken down by challenger Bob Horvath who garnered 117 votes. The last division up for grabs was Division 6, where Klass Vander Veen and his 122 votes defeated incumbent Tom White who only received 111.

Ken Benson of Division 4, Steve Campbell of Division 5 and Morris Zeinstra of Division 7 were all acclaimed.

Don Anderberg is back in as Mayor of Pincher Creek for another four years, defeating his challenger Dianne Gray with 701 votes to her 330.

Pincher Creek council returns three incumbents for the next term. Wayne Elliott led the way with 844 votes, trailing behind him were Mark Barber with 787 votes and Lorne Jackson with 765.

Among the new blood on council will be Scott Korbett, who had the second highest voter total with 804. Joining him will be Brian McGillivray (682 votes) and Sussanne O’Rourke (423 votes).

In all for both mayor and council, 5,990 votes were cast in Pincher Creek this year.

Crowsnest Pass:

Mayor Blair Painter of Crowsnest Pass was acclaimed as Mayor, and didn’t factor into the election night.

Incumbents Marlene Anctil (1,059 votes), Dave Filipuzzi (1,143 votes), Doreen Glavin (1,022 votes), and Dean Ward (1,056 votes) were all re-elected.

Joining them for the next four years will be new comers Gordon O. Lundy, who pulled in 966 votes and Lisa Sygutek who got 954 votes.

7,040 votes in total were cast in Crowsnest Pass this election season.

Taber:

 Four out of six councillors in the Town of Taber will be new faces.

Only incumbents Jack Brewin and Joe Strojwas were re-elected to Town Council.

Former Councillor Randy Sparks ran for the mayor’s position, losing to incumbent Andrew Prokop 1,227 to 736.

The newcomers include Garth Bekkering, Carly Firth, Mark Garner and Louis Tams.

Brewin garnered the most votes with 1,062, followed closely by Bekkering with 1,003,

Firth had 956 votes, Garner 846, Tams 885,  and the final council spot went to Strojwas with 865 votes.

Cardston:

Incumbent Cardston Mayor Maggie Kronen was acclaimed, and fellow incumbent councillors Dennis Barnes and Richard Bengry will return for another term after receiving 641 and 544 votes respectively.

The fresh blood making up Cardston Council includes Paula Brown (872 votes). Tim Court (750 votes), Peter Drew (796 votes) and Gerry Selk (819 votes).

Raymond:

One of the few communities in Southern Alberta that will be led by a new mayor includes the town of Raymond. Jim Depew has won the race for the mayoralty, pulling in 586 votes which was almost 100 more than his closest challenger.

Raymond Council will be made up of Ron Fromm (1,021 votes), Ralph Prince (793 votes), Bryce Coppieters (762 votes), Ken Heggie (738 votes), Greg Robinson (682 votes), Joan Hicken Harker (677 votes).

Milk River:

In Milk River, Peggy L. Losey was acclaimed as Mayor. She’ll be joined for the next four years by councillors Suzanne Liebelt (221 Votes), Margaret McCanna (186 Votes). Leonard McCulloch (224 Votes) and Philip Wright (229 Votes).

Picture Butte:

The former Deputy Mayor of Picture Butte has taken over the role of mayor, as Cathy Moore won by acclamation.

In the race for the four spots on council, it was the newcomer who captured the most votes. Cynthia Papworth led the way with 288 votes, coming in ahead of incumbents Henry de Kok (281), Joe Watson (274) and Teresa Feist (236).

Robert Brander was the only other candidate to run, and fell short with 227 votes.

Claresholm:

Doug MacPherson is the new Mayor of Claresholm, after capturing 554 votes and edging out Mike McAlonan (492) and Betty Fieguth (479).

The town’s outgoing mayor, Rob Steel, didn’t run in the election.

As for councillors, none of the three incumbents were able to hold onto their spots, as Jamie Cutler (436), Shelley Ford (610) and Lyal O’Neill (578) were all failed to make the cut.

Replacing them are Brad Schlossberger (1,072), Kieth Carlson (1,071), Craig Zimmer (939), Lise Schulze (926), Gaven Moore (662) and Donna Courage (637).

Nanton:

It was a convincing win for Jennifer Handley, who will be the next Mayor of Nanton. She had 600 votes, while challenger Charler R.A. Fenton finished with 196.

The top five councillors to be elected are Terry Wickett (692), incumbent David Mitchell (525), John Dozeman (507), incumbent Beryl West (502) and Robert Daniel McLelland (424).

The sixth and final position on council will go to a recount, due to an extremely small margin between sixth and seventh place. Victor Czop (363) narrowly edged out Julie Barker (361).

Fort Macleod
 
Fort Macleod will have a new mayor, after incumbent Rene Gendre was soundly defeated, garnering just 71 votes.
 
There were three candidates for the position, with Brent Feyter taking the mayor-elect spot, with 579 votes, followed closely by William Kells at 553.
 
Gord Wolstenholme was one of only two incumbents to run, and the only one elected, with 645 votes.
 
The remaining five council faces will be new ones. They include: Jim Monteith with 933 votes, David L. Orr with 918 votes, Kristi Edwards with 617 votes, Marco Van Huigenbos with 577 votes and Warner Junior Dressler with 563.
