Innovation, determination and teamwork define 2018’s Lethbridge Greatness in Leadership event

LETHBRIDGE – The man credited with discovering the wreck of the RMS Titanic in 1985 and the WWII German Battleship Bismarck, will be the headline speaker at this year’s Lethbridge “Greatness in Leadership” event.

Dr. Robert Ballard will speak March 22 at the Enmax Centre along with Canadian two-time Olympic Gold Medallist Catriona Le May Doan, and GM Canada President Stephen K. Carlisle.

Hall of Fame Speaker and Author Connie Podesta, along with Western Canada based Author Darci Lang, round out the list.

It’s the fourth year the event has taken place, and Trevor Lewington with Economic Development Lethbridge, says the event has certainly evolved into something that draws not only business leaders, but also investors.

“People see the value that they’re getting, so that’s great. Some of the same sponsors have been with the organization year after year, which I think is telling about the quality and the value people perceive that they get. And more and more, people are asking ‘who’s the next speaker?’ So, there’s that anticipation.”

Past speakers have included Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Buzz Aldrin, and Martin Luther King III.

Lethbridge Mayor Chris Spearman says the event has become an annual highlight for the city.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity for leaders and aspiring leaders in our community to learn from and be inspired by people who know first-hand what it takes to overcome adversity and accomplish exceptional things.”

Teamwork Training CEO Ryan Miller also explains that the community aspect of the development day is key.

“It’s turned out to be the biggest gathering of our business leaders, community leaders and future leaders. And that’s very deliberate, why we bring those groups together. The richness of Greatness in Leadership is that we not only have over 600 students that come for free, and engage with our community business leaders …. but to have a chance to hear these speakers.”

Miller says it’s easy for people to relate to the “Wayne Gretzkys,” but their challenge is to also enhance professional development and to expand everyone’s definition of what a leader is about.

Tickets for the event go on sale January 31.
