Child abuse case nearing resolution

Feb 2, 2018 | 2:10 PM

LETHBRIDGE – A resolution could come as early as next month, for a 32-year-old Lethbridge man accused of child abuse.

During a brief court appearance Friday morning, Feb. 2, the lawyer representing the accused – who cannot be named to protect the identity of the two-year-old child – asked for an adjournment to Mar. 2. Defence counsel, Vincent Guinan, explained that they are currently reviewing case law, and acknowledged the delay is at their request, waiving their Jordan rights, which ensure a case proceeds within a reasonable amount of time.

Guinan also confirmed a statement from the Crown prosecutor during a past court appearance, in which he said the two sides are close to resolving the matter.

The man faces charges of assault causing bodily harm and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

The allegations arise from an anonymous tip that came in to the Lethbridge Police Service on Sept. 21, 2017, which indicated that a two-year-old child may be in danger.

With assistance from Child and Family Services, police conducted a welfare check, stating that the boy had visible injuries to his face and neck. In a media release, they added that an examination at he Chinook Regional Hospital revealed injuries all over the child’s body.

Police went on to say that the mother informed them the child had fallen, but medical staff determined the injuries were not consistent with a fall.

The mother faces charges of assault and failing to provide the necessaries of life and is scheduled to make her next court appearance on Feb. 9. She is currently out of custody on bail.
