LETHBRIDGE – The crowd at the ENMAX Centre were treated to one of the best back and fourth hockey games of the season on Tuesday night (Feb. 27), capped off by a come from behind 4-3 win for the Lethbridge Hurricanes over the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The Hurricanes started the game on time, when just 2:12 into the first period defenceman Tate Olson jumped into the play and fed a cross crease pass to Keltie Jeri-Leon to give Lethbridge a 1-0 lead. It was Jeri-Leon’s 8th goal of the season, his 7th since joining the Hurricanes in a trade from the Kamloops Blazers.

Six minutes later, at 8:29, Ty Prefontaine sprung forward Taylor Ross on a breakaway and he made no mistake going upstairs on Warriors goaltender Brody Willms to make it 2-0 for the Hurricanes.

That’s how the first period would end, with the shots sitting at six apiece.

In the second period, the Western Hockey League leading Warriors would take over. They threw everything but the kitchen sink at the net but Logan Flodell stood tall.

With under a minute to go, Moose Jaw’s efforts finally resulted in a goal as Tristan Langan scored but it was immediately waived off.

The referees discussed the call for nearly four minutes, and eventually ruled it a goal so the score stood up at 2-1 in favour of the Hurricanes after two periods. Shots were 13-5 in the Warriors favour in the second, and 19-11 overall.

Moose Jaw came out flying in the third period as well, scoring just 30 seconds into the final frame on a point shot from Jett Woo to tie the game 2-2. Then at 1:10 of the third the Warriors scored again to go ahead 3-2 on a Justin Almeida goal.

Facing one of the top teams in the WHL, the Hurricanes buckled down and got themselves on the comeback trail later in the period.

At 11:56, Jadon Joseph’s shot was stopped but Egor Zudilov picked up the rebound and beat Wilms on the backhand to tie the game up at 3-3.

The Hurricanes weren’t done there, with under two minutes to play in the third Dylan Cozens scored his 20 th goal of the season to give the Hurricanes the lead once again at 4-3.

The dying seconds saw the Warriors again funnel everything they had at the crease, but Hurricanes goaltender Logan Flodell made save after save to preserve the victory.

Flodell made 37 saves in total for his league leading 36th win of the season.

Speaking after the game, Flodell called it was an important win for the Hurricanes.

“If we’re going to go on a run in the playoffs, we’re going to have to beat teams like Moose Jaw to do it. We’ve shown that now against other top teams like Moose Jaw, Swift Current and Brandon but we’ve still got a lot of work to do,” Flodell said, adding they have to get prepared for their upcoming road trip.”

Hurricanes Head Coach Brent Kisio was happy with how his team started the game, and their response in the third period after a tough second.

“We didn’t quit, and we found a way to get a win. Anytime you come back like that it’s huge and they’re one of the best teams in the league, if not the best, so it’s a big win for us,” Kisio said.

He was also impressed by his goaltender’s play in net.

“Flodell was awesome, he made some key saves at key moments,” Kisio continued. “They had a couple of chances at the end there and he stood tall, but he’s been doing that for us ever since he got here.”

With the win, Lethbridge is now sitting at 31-25-6 on the season, a single point away from clinching a third straight playoff birth.

The Hurricanes will now prepare to hit the road for four games, beginning with a pair of games this weekend in Saskatchewan.

First up is a trip to Saskatoon on Friday, Mar. 2 to battle the Blades followed by a showdown with the Prince Alberta Raiders Saturday night.
