March storm headed for parts of southern Alberta

UPDATE Mar. 2 4:30 a.m.: All of southern Alberta is now included in the snowfall warning, including Lethbridge, Taber, and Fort Macleod.

LETHBRIDGE – Winter? It’s still with us, even though the calendar has changed over to March.

Snowfall warnings have been issued for a line that extends from southwestern Alberta, northeast past Lethbridge. Affected communities include Pincher Creek, Waterton, Piikani Nation, Crowsnest Pass, Claresholm, Stavely, Nanton, Vulcan, Milo, Enchant, Lomond, Brooks, Bow Island, and Medicine Hat.

Regions in the warning area can expect 10-20 cm by Sunday, Mar. 4.

“Southern Alberta is probably not going to get the worst of the snow, but pockets of 10-15 cm can be expected, especially west of Lethbridge towards the foothills,” Environment Canada meteorologist Dave Carlsen told Lethbridge News Now. He said Lethbridge is on the edge.

“The stronger part of the system will be going a bit farther north into central and northern Alberta, but you could see 10 cm,” he said.

Carlsen said it would be difficult to give an outlook for March, but explained the month is traditionally very volatile.

“The cold weather pattern has been pretty persistent, but it’s actually started to break down recently,” he said. “The really cold air has gone back into the Arctic.”

The more immediate forecast suggests a return to fair conditions with above-zero highs by the middle of next week.
