Annual Ask-A-Lawyer event happening in April

LETHBRIDGE – Anyone looking for legal advice, on a wide-ranging number of issues in Lethbridge, will have an opportunity to get it and for free.

The Lethbridge Legal Guidance Society, in conjunction with Alberta Law Day 2018, will be hosting their annual Ask-A-Lawyer event at the Lethbridge Courthouse on Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Community Program Manager Kathryn Linder says 10 volunteer lawyers will provide 20 to 30 minutes of free legal advice in all areas of law to residents of Lethbridge and the surrounding areas.

“In the case of civil matters, lawyers will let them know whether or not they have a case that’s worth pursuing,” she continued. “Sometimes they just need some direction and answers, and they get that for free without the consultation fee of a regular lawyer.”

Due to the volume they’ve seen at past events, Linder says they’ll likely be able to see about 100 people during the event.

“The questions run the gamut. We see lots of landlord-tenant issues, and lots of family issues generally through our regular clinics. At the Ask-A-Lawyer event we’ve also had some contract and property issues, as well as divorce, custody and guardianship issues,” Linder said, adding they also deal with wills and estates.

Another casualty of the volume the event sees, according to Linder, is that they don’t get a ton of follow-ups afterwards.

“It makes it very difficult for us. We do stay in touch with the people who qualify for our regular services, and some of them do call back fairly quickly to get some information and advice. Some of them we don’t hear from again, and that’s OK. They get their help, and obviously people keep coming back for more because we tend to get good feedback on the event,” Linder stated.

Because it’s happening on Law Day there will be lots of other things going on at the courthouse as well, so Linder thinks it’s a good time for the entire family too.

“We do have some space for walk-in appointments as well, though we do prefer people book in advance because it allows us to schedule them appropriately and with the right lawyer.”
