Drug and firearm seizure results in ALERT laying local charges

LETHBRIDGE —  Two suspected drug dealers are in police custody facing a string of charges as the result of a short investigation by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT).
 
On May 24, ALERT’s Lethbridge team searched a home in the 300-block of 6-A Avenue south, where arrests and seizures were made.
 
Inside the home, officers found a quantity of drugs worth $20,000, along with a .30-calibre rifle.  Other items seized included:
 
— ammunition and magazines;
— 132 grams of methamphetamine;
— 16.3 grams of suspected carfentanil;
— 8.3 grams of cocaine;
— 21 codeine pills;
— 4 mL hydromorphone; and
— $3,875 cash proceeds of crime.

Neither of the suspects arrested possessed a valid firearms license and the RCMP’s National Weapons Enforcement Support Team will continue to investigate the origins of the firearm.

Charged are 31 year old Joel Sovdi, who was already prohibited from owning firearms as the result of a previous criminal investigation.  He now faces five counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking; four counts of possession of proceeds of crime; breach of recognizance; and four firearms-related offences.   

37-year old Jeremy Bertin, has been charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking; possession of a controlled substance; possession of proceeds of crime; and three firearms-related offences.
