May 30, 2018 | 9:18 AM

LETHBRIDGE – Lethbridge Skating Club member, Rae Marie First Charger, was recently selected as Canada’s 2018 Canskate Athlete of the Year.

First Charger was presented with the award at the Skate Canada Achievement Awards Gala & Banquet, held on Saturday, May 26th in Calgary.

The Gala was the closing event of Skate Canada’s 2018 Ice Summit where Skate Canada celebrated success and honoured the many accomplishments of key contributors in the nation’s skating community.

First Charger was selected out of several other Canskate athletes as the South Region of Alberta Canskate Athlete of the year earlier in the season.

The recipients from all of Alberta’s eight regions were then considered for the title of Skate Canada Alberta – NWT/Nunavut Canskate Athlete of the Year, an award that First Charger was also a recipient of. She received that award earlier in May in Edmonton.

First Charger’s mother Chantal Lacusta says words cannot express how proud they are.

“She has shown so much dedication to her skating,” she continued. “For being only six years old, she has already achieved an amazing accomplishment and gained a lifetime memory.”

Coach Trish York, of the Lethbridge Skating Club, says they’re very excited for First Charger to have been selected for such an incredible award from Skate Canada.

“She is an absolute joy to have on our Canskate program! She loves to learn, and it shows when she skates,” York added.

The Lethbridge Skating Club offered their congratulations to First Charger in a release, adding they’re excited to watch her passion for skating grow in the coming years.
