LETHBRIDGE – Following an investigation into two reports of a loud bang, believed to have been a gunshot in the area of 17 Street and 9 Avenue South, Lethbridge Police have laid charges against 32-year-old Shaun Hlavach.

After police arrived and extinguished a small fire in an alley in the immediate area, officers determined an improvised explosive device had been detonated due to evidence that was noted on-scene including a debris field.

During a neighbourhood canvass, the investigation led police to an address in the 800 block of 16th Street South which resulted in the arrest of two men from inside the residence.

Police contained the residence, and investigators from the Criminal Investigation Division executed a search warrant later the same day in the basement suite, with the assistance of the Explosive Disposal Unit.

Inside the residence, additional evidence and explosive materials were located and seized.

Hlavach is facing charges of intent to cause an explosion and making or possession of explosives for an unlawful purpose. He’s been held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Police say there’s nothing to suggest at this point in the investigation that the explosion was a targeted against any person or property.

The second man was released from custody without charges.
