Unemployment in southern Alberta takes fourth-straight drop

LETHBRIDGE – The jobless picture improved in the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region for a fourth straight month.

Numbers released Friday, July 6 show the unadjusted three-month moving average for the area was 4.9 per cent unemployment, down from 5.2 per cent in May. It’s also nearly back to the 4.8 per cent recorded in June 2017.

The area’s rate was second-lowest in the province, after Camrose-Drumheller, where the rate jumped from 4.0 to 4.4 per cent. Red Deer climbed from 4.9 to 5.4 per cent. The combined Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House, Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River region rose slightly to 6.7 per cent, Edmonton dropped slightly to 6.6 per cent, Calgary improved to 7.1 per cent, and there was a slight increase in Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake to 6.5 per cent.

Overall, Alberta’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate for June was 6.5 per cent, up from 6.2. The number of people working increased by 2,000. However, the size of the labour force was up by 8,800.

Sectors with noteworthy employment increases, adjusted for the season, included natural resources, construction, trade, and professional/scientific/technical services. Manufacturing was down, along with educational and health care services, and accommodation/food service.
