Castle on fire watch for second year

CASTLE MOUNTAIN – For the second straight year, the people at Castle Mountain Resort are keeping a close eye on fire conditions.

Last year’s Kenow fire prompted an evacuation of Castle. This year it’s the Sage Creek Fire, which has so far only resulted in an evacuation alert.

“It’s nothing really new for us, but it is odd for this to happen two years in a row,” general manager Brad Brush said. He explained that fewer people have been coming to the resort since the alert was issued.

“We had an event on the weekend that went off quite well, and right now we have some of the fire crews staying here as well.”

The fire has been growing but remains entirely on the British Columbia side of the boundary. Fire suppression is being used at the resort to protect it, thanks to the efforts of fire crews from Pincher Creek. Brush said that includes sprinklers, hose lines, and containers that can be filled using tankers or helicopters.

The area started the week with a break from the smoke and the extreme heat, and Brush hopes rain during the weekend helped, along with the cooler air.

The Municipal District of Pincher Creek has been providing daily updates on the fire’s progress.
