WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK – A wildfire south of the Waterton townsite has prompted an evacuation alert to be ordered for the entire national park.

Parks Canada said the fire is in the Boundary Creek valley and is currently out of control. It issued the alert at 10:45 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23 citing potential danger to life and health.

An alert requires people to be ready to leave on short notice, but Parks Canada said it will attempt to give visitors and residents as much notice as possible should an evacuation be ordered.

People are asked to choose a location to gather their family members at should the time come; gather valuables; make arrangements to ensure people with disabilities can be moved safely; make arrangements as well for children and pets as well as livestock; and arrange transportation and accommodations.
