LETHBRIDGE – A new documentary by a local filmmaker will try to connect people with nature over a 43-minute journey through the diverse wildlife in Lethbridge’s river valley.

The Friends of the Helen Schuler Nature Centre Society will present the official release of “Wildlife of the Oldman River Valley” filmed by Rick Andrews on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 3 p.m. at the Lethbridge Public Library’s main branch.

All proceeds from the special event will go towards supporting of the Helen Schuler Nature Centre’s Outdoor Learning Classroom and Amphitheatre project and will feature a screening of the film, Q&A with wildlife photographer and filmmaker Rick Andrews, and an opportunity to purchase a copy of the Wildlife of the Oldman River Valley DVD.

Andrews says through his photography and filmmaking, he’s always tried to connect people to our natural world because quite often we will only care about the things that we are emotionally connected to.

“The programs delivered by the Nature Centre in the outdoor learning classroom will help create this connection, and what better way to learn about the natural world around us than being totally immersed in it.”

The Helen Schuler Nature Centre’s new outdoor classroom will replace an outdated structure with a multifunctional space that allows for group gatherings, presentations and quiet reflection.

“We had over 51,000 visitors at the Nature Centre last year, and our current outdoor structure has reached the end of its life-cycle,” said Curtis Goodman, Resource Development Coordinator with the Helen Schuler Nature Centre. “The Outdoor Learning Classroom and Amphitheatre project will replace the ageing structure with exciting new features and universal accessibility so that we can continue to provide exceptional programming and places of reflection for our visitors.”

“We’re honoured to have the support and talents of Rick Andrews for this project,” Goodman added.
