Annual local Poppy Campaign begins

Oct 27, 2018 | 8:46 AM

LETHBRIDGE – The Annual Poppy Campaign of the Royal Canadian Legion is underway, which will provide the public with poppies to honour veterans.

The General Stewart Branch is distributing poppy boxes to over 425 locations in Lethbridge, Coaldale, Raymond, Magrath and Stirling this year.

Young people in the community are launching the campaign on Saturday, Oct. 27. Guides, Scouts, 4H, and Cadets will be at various locations throughout Lethbridge with Poppies.

“Each year these dedicated youth volunteer their time to ensure a successful start to the campaign and remind all of us of the importance of remembrance”, Chair of the General Stewart Poppy Committee Pat McIntosh said.

All the funds generated by the campaign go to support veterans in our communities. Last year, over $84,000 in donations was raised, and the Legion is hoping to raise $90,000 this year.

Adjustments were made to poppy boxes in high volume locations after last year’s thefts to make them more secure.

This is a special year as it marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

The campaign runs from Oct. 26th to Nov. 11th.
