LETHBRIDGE – Day four in the three-week sexual assault trial of 34-year-old Trevor Pritchard saw one alleged victim testify how she met someone by the name of “Philip Fieldcamper” online, using the Facebook Messenger application.

The girl, now 16, was 14 when she received a “friend request” from Fieldcamper in Oct./Nov. of 2016, after a relative set up a Facebook account for her. The girl testified that she often would evaluate friend requests by searching the person’s profile for names or people she recognized and would look through their photos if possible.

After the request was received, she asked a youth group friend about it, and testified that the friend told her Fieldcamper was someone she knew and who was trustworthy.

The 16-year-old then messaged Fieldcamper back asking “do I know you?” to which he replied “No, but I’d like to get to know you.”

The pair began regular communication through Facebook Messenger, and the girl testified that she had told the new friend where she lived, about her family, where they lived, and other personal details. The interactions progressed until Fieldcamper sent her a message in late 2016 about wishing they could live together in a cabin as a family.

Crown Prosecutor Donna Spanner asked the girl how those conversations made her feel at the time, to which she replied that he made her “feel special” because she had been dealing with depression and family issues.

The messages became more personal in early 2017, when Fieldcamper told her that he was “trying to protect” her and that he loved her. Messages about kissing were also sent, along with regular requests for photos from the girl.

“I thought it was just a way of him caring about me,” she testified.

The girl then told the court she gave him her telephone number and a request was made by Fieldcamper to meet with her, to which she replied she wasn’t sure she had the time. The Crown also asked the girl whether she ever intended to meet Fieldcamper, to which she replied “no.”

By Jan. 15, 2017, the conversations and requests for photos became more explicit, with Fieldcamper asking the 16-year-old to have sex and for her to send nude photos. However, by late January 2017 the girl had ceased receiving messages from Fieldcamper.

A text message between the girl and another alleged victim was also raised in court in which the other individual wrote “you should f*** Philip.”

Upon cross examination, the girl was questioned about that text and whether it meant having sex with Philip, or potentially trying to ruin his life. The 16-year-old testified she interpreted the text from the other alleged victim as encouraging her to have sex with him.

The girl was then questioned about whether she had ever seen Fieldcamper, whether he had ever revealed himself as Trevor Pritchard and whether she had ever seen his face, to which she replied that the only picture she had received was of a pixelated Google photo of a young man wearing a hoodie.

Testimony will continue Monday, when a second alleged victim is expected to take the stand.
