Little Bear named Officer of the Order of Canada

OTTAWA – An advocate for Indigenous education and self-government, a founder of the University of Lethbridge’s Department of Native American Studies, is one of 103 appointments to the Order of Canada.
Leroy Little Bear, who was born and raised on the Blood Reserve, has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada “for his advocacy of Indigenous rights and self-governance, and for his work to promote access to education for Indigenous peoples globally,” the announcement said.
Little Bear has previously been honoured with the key to the City of Lethbridge, an honourary Doctor of Arts from the U of L, the Alberta Order of Excellence, and most recently, the Speaker Research award at the 2017 Fall Convocation.
The list of appointments also includes Olympic cross-country skiing gold-medallist Beckie Scott, artificial intelligence expert Geoffrey Hinton, “Blue Bloods” actor Len Cariou, and BioWare co-founders Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka.
