Notley coy about NDP election platform – but, no sales tax planned

EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Rachel Notley says while she won’t bring in a sales tax, a health premium or a payroll tax, it’s wait and see on the rest of her tax platform.

Notley says the N-D-P will bring in more details closer to the election, which by law must come in March, April or May.

When asked if changes are coming to income tax rates, Notley would only say that there is no plan to alter tax advantages for low and middle-income Albertans.

Notley’s government has hiked the corporate tax rate, reduced the small-business tax, brought in a carbon tax and replaced the flat tax on income with a progressive system that sees high-income earners pay more.

Opposition United Conservative Leader Jason Kenney has said he’ll dump the carbon tax, but hasn’t said what other tax changes he plans, except that his overall goal is reducing taxes.

Notley says U-C-P party members have endorsed returning to the flat tax and that Kenney has mused about bringing in toll roads.
