AGLC to issue 10 more retail cannabis licences following supply improvements
EDMONTON — The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission announced on Friday they will be issuing 10 more retail cannabis licences in the province, nearly two months after it suspended the licences following a national supply shortage.
“After seeing a modest improvement in supply over the last few weeks, we are confident the inventory can accommodate an additional 10 retail locations,” said Alain Maisonneuve, president and CEO of AGLC, in a statement. “AGLC continues to work with our licensed producers and current retailers towards solutions that will support a sustainable marketplace.”
The licences will be issued to the first 10 applicants that have met all conditions after the decision was made to suspend the licences. The organization, according to a release, has a queue of approved retailers on a first-in, first-out basis to ensure an equitable process.
Although supply levels have seen improvement, they are not yet at a stable enough level to fully reopen the licensing process or accept new applications for retail cannabis stores., according to AGLC. The organization says they are currently in discussion with 12 licensed producers to secure product.
