Lethbridge well represented at 2019 Canada Winter Games

RED DEER, AB – Tonight marks the opening ceremony of the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

This year, Red Deer plays host to the athletic showcase. The event features 21 different sports in total including snowboarding, hockey and boxing.

The Games will welcome up to 3600 athletes, managers and coaches.

Team Alberta has 247 athletes competing in 19 sports, with 73 coaches, managers and support staff, and 19 Mission Staff.

The Games will feature some Lethbridge region flavor. 10 athletes, seven officials, coaches and many volunteers will be in Red Deer representing Lethbridge and the surrounding area.

The following athletes will represent the local region during the Games:

  • Evelyn Beaton – Judo
  • Hayleigh Craig – Hockey
  • Joel Demaere – Judo
  • Joshua Peck – Boxing
  • Kaleb Muller – Long Track Speed Skating
  • Kiera Westlake – Judo
  • Kyle Oliver – Boxing
  • Nathan Demaere – Judo
  • Taylor Althouse – Judo
  • Zack Stringer – Hockey

The Canada Games are held every two years and alternate between the summer and winter. This is the third time Alberta has hosted the event. Lethbridge hosted the Games in 1975, while Grande Prairie hosted the event in 1995.

The 2019 Canada Winter Games start tonight with the opening ceremonies, with the first competitions going Feb. 16 and running through to March 2.
