Kodiaks basketball players win season awards

FORT MCMURRAY, AB – A member of the Lethbridge Kodiaks women’s basketball team has been rewarded for her hard work.

Lethbridge native Jocelyn Neilson has been named the ACAC women’s basketball south division rookie of the year.

Awards were presented for both the men’s and women’s teams at banquets in Fort McMurray and Lloydminster. In addition to being named rookie of the year, Neilson (a Lethbridge Collegiate Institute alumna) was named a south division second team all-star.

During her rookie campaign, she averaged 10.7 points per game, finishing second on the roster in scoring and fourth in the entire ACAC for shooting percentage at 54.1 per cent.

According to a release from Lethbridge College, Neilson is the first Kodiak to win rookie of the year since Sunder West for the 2014-2015 season.

Her teammate, Juhee Anderson earned first team all-star honours. This past year was her first season with the Kodiaks after transferring MacEwan University. She led the team in scoring with 14.7 points per game. That tied her for sixth in the ACAC. She was also eighth in the conference in assists with 69 and 10th in three-point shooting percentage (34.1 per cent).

For the Kodiaks men’s team, Michael Clemons was named a south division first team all-star. Lincoln Anderson and Orin Porter Jr. were both named second team all-stars.

Clemons played his last season with the Kodiaks and retires from his collegiate career as the all-time leader in assists (868) and steals (238). This year, he averaged 12.1 points per game. He previously played for Grande Prairie Regional College.

Cardston’s Lincoln Anderson led the Kodiaks in scoring at 20.6 points per game. He also led the conference in rebounding, with 9.7 rebounds per game.

Orin Porter Jr. finishes second on the team and sixth in the conference in scoring during his first season with the Kodiaks. He averaged 18.8 points per game. He was also second in the conference in blocks (25) and was fourth in shooting percentage at 52.7 per cent.

The Kodiaks women’s team start their playoff run Thursday, Feb. 28 with a quarterfinal matchup against Keyano College in Fort McMurray.
