UPDATE: Fatality at Lethbridge water treatment plant

Mar 1, 2019 | 4:32 PM

LETHBRIDGE – UPDATE: Trent Bancarz, a spokesperson for Alberta Labour, confirmed that the victim in Friday’s incident was a 51-year-old male.

He could not confirm if the individual was from Lethbridge, and said the victim’s name will not be released. However, he also confirmed that the worker was struck by a wheeled piece of equipment, specifically a telehandler, which helps lift heavy items.

He added that a Stop Work Order has been issued at the site.

“OHS (Occupational Health and Safety) was in control of the site. We released the site back to the prime contractor yesterday (Sunday, March 3) evening at about six o’clock and we’ve issued two stop-work orders to the prime contractors,” Bancarz said.

“Both of them relate to operating the telehandler. The orders will stay in place until the prime contractor provides proof of adequate worker safety training, and evidence that manufacturer specifications will be followed.”

OHS continues to investigate the incident. Bancarz said it’s not known yet exactly how the worker ended up under the equipment at the site.

Lethbridge Police have confirmed that a worker died Friday, after an accident at the Lethbridge water treatment plant near Indian Battle Park.

Police say they were called out to the facility just after the noon-hour, but because Occupational Health and Safety is now investigating the matter, they can not reveal any other information.

It appears as though the accident occurred outside of the plant, where a Genie Brand Zoom Boom, which is an industrial piece of equipment used to lift loads short distances, somehow tipped over.

The vehicle can be seen on its side with two wheels in the air just outside of the facility’s front doors.

It’s not clear if the worker was male or female, whether the person worked for the city or whether it may have been a contract worker.

Occupational Health and Safety is on the scene.

LNN will have more information as it becomes available.
