Ask-A-Lawyer event will look a little different in 2019, but the premise behind it remains the same

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Have a legal problem, or need some legal help? You might be able to find a solution to your questions, and for free, at an upcoming event in Lethbridge.

In conjunction with Law Day 2019, even though there won’t be a formal Law Day event this year, Lethbridge Legal Guidance will be hosting their annual Ask-A-Lawyer event on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13.

Community Program Manager Kathryn Linder says this year’s event will be a little different as a result.

“Last year, and all the year’s previous that we’ve held this event, we have done it at the Courthouse on a Saturday morning with 10 or 11 volunteer lawyers and people filtering through. This year since the Courthouse is not hosting any Law Day events, we are hosting the event here at our offices.”

Volunteer lawyers will provide 20 to 30 minutes of free legal advice in all areas of law to residents of Lethbridge and the surrounding areas.

“We have four lawyers Friday morning, another four Friday afternoon and another four on Saturday morning. People can call and get an appointment spot because we’ll be booking for that next week. They’ll get an appointment time to come in, meet with a volunteer lawyer for half an hour and get their questions answered.”

Linder says pre-booked appointments are preferred, especially considering with the way they’re running the event this year, walk-ins are going to be very difficult.

“It would be best if people phoned us before April 5th, as early is better. Intake takes 5-10 minutes depending on the complications and the complexity of the story and what we need to know. There’s no restriction on the legal matters that we’ll see at the event.”

Generally, Linder says they prefer people who have an actual legal issue that they have a question about to book an appointment.

“Just because with the volume of people we hope to see we want to help the people who have actual questions,” she continued. “People seeking just general information can find a lot of stuff available on our website, or they can call us, and we can point them in the right direction.”

As far as what people tend to ask about, Linder explains it covers a pretty broad spectrum.

“We get lots of questions about separation/divorce, custody; we have people coming in asking about landlord/tenant problems. Both landlords and tenants, landlords might have tenants that won’t leave or aren’t paying rent as an example. We get questions about wills and estates, and this is the only time we’ll see them at the Ask-A-Lawyer event so, if people have questions about drawing up a will or how to be an executor on a will for somebody, those types of questions. Immigration is a little complicated, we have seen a few over the years, but those issues are complex, so it’s hard to do in a 30-minute timeslot,” Linder stated, adding there’s not much they don’t see at the event.
