UPDATE: Permission granted to raise Pride flag in Taber

May 21, 2019 | 12:02 PM

Taber, AB UPDATE: Terence Harding, Infrastructure Ministry Spokesperson confirms to LNN that the Pride Flag will fly in front of the provincial building in Taber for one week, beginning June 1. Harding says because there were no incidents last year involving the flag, there will not be any additional security in front of the building this year.

The Taber Pride Flag will be raised once again this year in front of the local provincial building.

Permission was granted by former Infrastructure Minister Sandra Jansen in 2018, after Taber Town Council decided only municipal, provincial and Canadian flags would fly on town-owned flagpoles.

An anonymous group, citing religious reasons, started a petition to try and block the ceremony this year, which gathered just over 1,100 signatures. It has since been closed. However a counter-petition was then also started, to encourage signatures in support of the flag-raising ceremony which has garnered nearly 1,100 signatures.

According to a poster and message on the Taber Pride and Taber Equality Alliance Facebook page, the ceremony will be held in front of the provincial building on Saturday, June 1, from 1-2 p.m. TEA Spokesperson Kathleen McKenzie told LethbridgeNewsNOW the group expected the answer from the UCP government/infrastructure ministry at the end of last week.
