LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Police have charged an Ottawa man in connection with an incident on Wednesday evening, May 22.

It’s alleged that a 75-year-old woman was “viciously assaulted” in her home. Police say they responded to a home on Fairway Street South at around 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, along with EMS.

They had received a call from neighbors who heard screaming and allegedly saw a woman struggling with a man in her garage.

When they arrived, responders found a woman who was badly beaten. The woman was rushed to hospital with head and facial injuries.

Police have stated that their investigation determined that a man broke into the woman’s home during the early morning hours of May 21 and spent the night in a basement bedroom while she was asleep upstairs. Over the course of 18 hours, it’s alleged that the man stayed in the house as she was unaware of his presence. The night of May 22, police say the woman heard a noise and went to investigate. She was confronted by a masked man.

It’s alleged that the man repeatedly punched the woman in the face, knocking her to the ground and then dragged her to the garage and hit her multiple times in the head with a bicycle before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.

At around 10:40 p.m., an officer who was dealing with an unrelated matter in the area of 9 Avenue and 7 Street South noticed a vehicle driving by with its headlights off. The license plate matched one of a stolen vehicle and a traffic stop took place.

The driver was the lone occupants of the vehicle and was arrested. Additionally, police seized property belonging to the man that was left behind at the Fairway Street home.

The victim was treated for her injuries at Chinook Regional Hospital for multiple broken bones in her nose and other head injuries. She has since been released into the care of her family.

Police say the subject was not known to the victim and has “no ties” to Lethbridge.

21-year-old Adam Hall Hobkirk-Onate faces charges of assault causing bodily harm, housebreaking and commit robbery and disguise with intent.

He’s been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on May 27, 2019.
