Walking to make cystic fibrosis history

May 24, 2019 | 7:18 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – On Sunday, you have the chance to help people affected by cystic fibrosis.

The annual Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History is on Sunday, May 26 at Henderson Lake.

Across Canada, thousands of participants will band together to raise awareness and funds for Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Funds raised at walks across the country are used to target world-class research and support for top-quality individualized cystic fibrosis care.

The genetic disorder affects the lungs, pancreas, liver, kidneys and intestine. Long-term issues can include difficulty breathing and coughing up mucus due to frequent lung infections.

The Lethbridge walk is being organized by the Kinsmen Club of Lethbridge.

Kinsmen member JR Matthew said this is the 15th annual walk in Lethbridge.

“The Kinsmen Club of Lethbridge and Kin Canada formed a partnership back in 1963 in Ontario to actually hep out with Cystic Fibrosis Canada and since that time, we’ve actually raised 45-million dollars for cystic fibrosis research as well as patient care,” he noted.

“To understand the impact of this – back in the sixties, a child with CF was expected to live only until about age four. Now, they generally live to be in their fifties, so we’ve made huge strides with that.”

Registration on Sunday opens on-site at 9:30 a.m., with the walk starting at 10:30 a.m. Pets on a leash are welcome and the walk will cover five kilometres with the closing ceremonies set for 1:30 p.m.

Matthew said after the walk, participants can enjoy a barbeque, bouncy houses for the kids and music.
