LETHBRIDGE, AB – After a bit of a tumultuous 2018-19 season behind the bench, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s hockey team is making a significant change.

The Pronghorns announced that Doug Paisley has been named the head coach of the women’s hockey program on Monday morning, becoming the ninth head coach in the program’s 23-year history.

Paisley took time to thank Executive Director Ken McInnes, the Hiring Committee and the entire Pronghorn Athletics team for their time and consideration through the selection process.

“I am thrilled to coach at the U of L,” Paisley said. “I truly believe it is a great fit for both myself and the women’s hockey program and I couldn’t be happier to once again join the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Women’s Hockey Team.”

Paisley, a long-time hockey coach in Lethbridge, brings a wealth of experience at numerous levels in both the men’s and women’s game.

This past season, he was the head coach of the Lethbridge AAA Midget Hurricanes, who finished tied for first in the Chrysler Division of the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League (AMHL) and played in the final of the prestigious Mac’s Midget Hockey Tournament held each Christmas in Calgary.

“The Pronghorns have always been a program that I have supported and tracked since coaching there in 2006, and I am very excited for the opportunity to come back and lead this team. I look forward to getting started and working with the players.”

Executive Director Ken McInnes says they had a solid pool of candidates show an interest in this position, and they found someone with a great hockey pedigree and the right character to help the women’s hockey program reach the level of excellence they aspire to.

“Doug did an excellent job in the interview process and has proven himself to be a tremendous leader, great communicator and will be a great addition to Pronghorn Athletics and the University of Lethbridge. We are excited to welcome him back to the Pronghorn family,” Paisley added.

As a coach in the women’s game, Paisley spent the 2005-06 season as an assistant coach with the Pronghorn program under former head coach Doug MacLeod.

He also spent three seasons with the Midget ‘A’ Female Lethbridge Barracudas as the associate coach and two years with the Major Bantam AAA Female Lethbridge Little Caesars as the head coach.

As well, Paisley has spent the last five years as the Lethbridge Hurricanes president of the Hurricanes Board of Directors.
