LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch will be holding a brief remembrance ceremony next week at the Lethbridge Cenotaph to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

Legion President Michael Cormican says it’s a privilege for him as President members to conduct this ceremony on behalf of their members.

“This is an act of remembrance as we want to give our thanks to those who participated in D-Day and the days following in the liberation of France,” Cormican said.

The Normandy landings were the landing operations on Tuesday, June 6, 1944, of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day, it was the most massive seaborne invasion in history.

The ceremony will take place at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 6, in front of the Yates Building.

The Royal Canadian Legion upholds the act of Remembrance across Canada with many community ceremonies big and small.

Each is equally important to foster a sense of pride and pass on to the youth of the past military service, sacrifice and commitments Canadians made and continue to make in defence of Canada.

Tyler Black, a student from LCI, will give a short talk on his experiences visiting JUNO beach.

“To demonstrate an appreciation of the sacrifices made for our freedom in marking the 75th anniversary, we ask for the support of the local community and businesses by attending the short ceremony. The public is invited back to the branch to share in comradeship at the legion and enjoy light refreshments after the ceremony,” Cormican stated.
