LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge has announced that after an extensive search, Deputy Fire Chief Marc Rathwell has been selected as the next Chief of Fire and Emergency Services.

Rathwell’s career has seen him move through the ranks in the City since he was hired in May 1996 as a Paramedic/Firefighter. In 2010 he became the Medical Training Officer, then served as a Lieutenant in 2014 and advancing to Captain in 2016 before becoming Deputy Chief in November 2018.

Director of Community Services Tony Vanden Heuvel says the quality of candidates was very impressive, making this competition a strong one.

“That certainly speaks to the strength in leadership within our department and the strong commitment to public safety our members show day in and day out.”

Mayor Chris Spearman congratulated Rathwell on his appointment by saying they have great confidence in his ability to lead their Integrated Fire and Emergency Services into the future.

Rathwell says he’s honoured to accept this new role and feels supported by a great team at Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services.

“It’s exciting times as we add a new fire station to West Lethbridge and continue to adapt and expand to meet the needs of our growing community,” Rathwell added.

Retiring Fire Chief Hildebrand will continue working until the end of August, allowing a transition time between chiefs.
