Three vehicle collision claims three lives near Vulcan

VULCAN — A three vehicle collision on Wednesday, June19, is responsible for three fatalities.

The incident happened around 5:30-pm on Highway 23 just south of Vulcan.

A preliminary investigation by Vulcan RCMP indicated a truck with two occupants was travelling southbound on Highway 23 when it crossed the centre line and collided with a northbound semi-tractor trailer unit. The truck then collided with another truck that was following the semi.

The 45-year-old male passenger of the southbound truck died at the scene. The 22-year-old male driver was taken to a Calgary hospital where he was pronounced deceased a short time later. Both occupants were from Lethbridge.

The 64-year-old male driver of the northbound truck, from Vulcan, died at the scene. The semi-tractor driver was not injured.

Vulcan RCMP and an RCMP Collision Analyst continue to investigate. It’s expected traffic will need to be re-routed for several hours on Highway 23.

The names of the deceased will not be released and no further updates are anticipated.
