TD Bank Employees in Lethbridge Thwart $145,000 Fraud Attempt

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A man from Calgary has been charged with attempting fraud after he allegedly provided fake documents that would have seen $145,000 taken out of someone else’s bank account.

Lethbridge Police Service was called to the west side TD Bank last Friday after staff reported the incident.

Workers at the branch claim that 54-year-old Mark Anderson gave them a fake Ontario birth certificate and a driver’s license in order to try to get money transferred from one account to another.

Employees told police that they noted several red flags over the course of the transaction and ended up contacting the actual account holder. They confirmed that the account holder was in Ontario, but had not given anyone permission to access his accounts.

Once police arrived, Anderson allegedly tried to run away, but he was eventually caught.

He has been charged with attempted fraud over $5,000, showing a forged document, identity fraud, identity theft, and resisting arrest.

Anderson has been scheduled for a court appearance Monday.
