Coaldale Fire Department – a chance to have some fun

Jun 28, 2019 | 2:20 PM

COALDALE — The Coaldale and District Fire department used the last week of June to get in a last practice before the summer break. Those viewing the events in front of the Coaldale arena might have wondered if it was indeed a practice or firefighters just having fun.

Let’s just concede it was a bit of both.

Fire Chief Kevin McKeown admitted it was a chance to get their families out and together to have a fun time doing a hose-laying competition.

“The most important thing is to get the members together to have a good time – we’re very community and family minded people and it’s an opportunity to have some fun.”

McKeown noted that the fire team practices several times a year, using the hoses, coupling and uncoupling them, to test their skills.

The interesting element to the event this year was the fact that the spouses decided they wanted to give it a try, which they had never done before.

The Chief’s wife, Darcee Abrey-McKeown, says she’s been part of the fie industry her whole life, as she watched her father do the work and her mother actually competed years ago. Since her husband is the Chief, she convinced him to allow the wives to try out a team this year. Fortunately, three other wives were willing and they were able to put together a team of four.

Darcee said it was a fun experience and they are hoping to do it again next year.

There was an enthusiastic group of spectators on hand, made up of the firefighters’ children and members of the community.
