CORRECTION: Taber considers lifting ban on horse riding in town

TABER, AB – Note: This story has been corrected. During Lethbridge News Now’s interview with Taber Mayor Andrew Prokop, it was indicated that council was considering implementing a ban on horse riding in the community. Chief Administrative Officer Cory Armfelt has since told the station that they are looking to lift the horse riding ban that is already in effect.

Prokop explains that the issue first came up when their bylaw officer spoke to residents who were riding their horses along 80th Avenue, despite the prohibition being in effect.

As there were no pertinent safety issues identified with the current regulations, it prompted a review of their bylaws.

Prokop says the matter took up a good chunk of time at this week’s council meeting.

“I think it was an open-minded view as far as what other communities are possibly doing and maybe what we can do to accommodate a similar ask and what can work all around for our community.”

In the end, council decided to let their office look into it and come back in July with a more detailed report.

It would include discussions with the impacted residents and any horse-related groups.

Under the current regulations, animal riding is only permitted within municipal limits for approved events like rodeos and parades.
