Grain bin campground “overwhelmed” with booking requests

MOOSE JAW, SK – The Bin There Campground just started bringing in their first bushel of guests last week.

Julie Hilling and her husband Dennis have been hard at work over the last few months to convert some of their old grain bins into a campground, equipped with full living rooms and kitchens, furnaces and air conditioning, and everything else needed to make the hollow metal walls feel comfortable.

She says renovating them was a lot more difficult than she initially thought due to the fact that the bins are circular, yet most furnishings and home decor pieces are designed for square buildings.

At the end of the day, though, she is thrilled with how the six cabins, 13 RV spaces, and rec hall turned out.

Since starting her Facebook page just recently, she says they have been flooded with bookings.

“I’ll never underestimate the power of social media again,” says Hilling. “I’ve got July and August in 2020, I’ve got three weekends available, and in ’21, I’ve got four weekends available because people are planning and reviewing this well in advance.”

Hilling believes part of the charm is the simple fact that it is quintessentially a small town Saskatchewan experience.

She got the idea for the campground from other similar amenities, so she fully anticipates that someone in Southern Alberta will get the idea to start something like this in their community.
