Police promoting safety ahead of Street Machine Weekend in Lethbridge

Jul 11, 2019 | 10:18 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Ahead of the 41st annual Street Machine Weekend, the Lethbridge Police Service is reminding everyone to enjoy the event responsibly.

In a release, the LPS said that all rules of the road still apply during the event, which starts with a drive-in movie experience at Exhibition Park on Thursday, July 11.

On Friday, it’s the Street Wheelers cruise. For that event, 3 Avenue South will be closed between 4 Street South and Mayor Magrath Drive South from 6:30 p.m. to midnight.

Parking along that section of 3 Avenue South and some areas around Galt Gardens will not be allowed from 5 p.m. to midnight.

The City of Lethbridge said that during that time, northbound and southbound motorists traveling on 13 Street South or Stafford Drive South should expect delays at 3 Avenue South intersections.

It’s advised that drivers use Mayor Magrath and Scenic Drive as alternate routes.

The LPS is reminding attendees at the cruise that liquor consumption on the street is prohibited and must be done within licensed beer gardens/local establishments only.

Police noted that in years past, they’ve encountered issues with speeding, stunting, distracted driving and impaired driving, among other violations on the roads.

Additional police presence will be on duty during the cruise night and the LPS will be on patrol throughout the city all weekend.

“Out of town visitors are advised the City of Lethbridge utilizes photo enforcement and there are multiple intersections monitored by Intersection Safety Devices that record red light and speeding violations. All ISD intersections are clearly sign posted,” read the release.

The LPS concluded by congratulating the Street Wheelers Car Club on 41 years of hosting the Street Machine Weekend and thanked them for their efforts to work with law enforcement to make sure the event is safe and fun for everyone attending.

Additional events will be held Saturday and Sunday. For more on the Street Wheelers, visit streetwheelers.com/.
