Lethbridge County roads impacted by improper irrigation

Jul 17, 2019 | 8:00 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The County office is reminding farmers of the importance of proper irrigation practices after several incidents were reported about end guns spraying water onto road surfaces and into ditches.

This can cause unsafe conditions for drivers that head down suddenly-wet roads.

“This is a dangerous and costly practice, posing safety concerns for citizens and damaging County infrastructure,” reads a press release from the government.

The County reports that repairing a single section of a damaged road can cost between $1,500 and $3,000, but in cases where the pavement’s subgrade is affected, repairs can be much more expensive.

“Additionally, if the misuse of these end guns is severe enough it can impact County ditches and culverts by inundating them with excess water that may cause adverse effects to downstream landowners.”

Those in violation can be fined up to $3,000 under the Lethbridge County’s Highway Protection Bylaw #1453. In some cases, Community Peace Officers (CPO) may also charge the landowner with the cost of repairing the road.

Infractions can be reported to the CPOs at 403-634-0755.
