Lethbridge Food Banks grateful for donations from Seasons Retirement Communities

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A $2,000 donation made on Monday, July 15, by a group from the Seasons Retirement Communities, will enable the Lethbridge Food Bank to re-stock their shelves and continue to provide hampers to those in need. A second $2,000 donation from the communities was also made to the Lethbridge Interfaith Foodbank Society

Food Bank Executive Director Maral Kiani Tari says the groups held a competition recently to raise the money along with some food donations.

“They do different campaigns throughout the year. So, they have one closer to Christmas as well, where they have donated hams and turkeys and… food drives to our local food bank. And then at this time of the year they do one like this as well.”

Kiani Tari says donations tend to go down during the summertime, as compared with the typical holiday seasons like Christmas/New Year and Thanksgiving.

“So, the cash donation that we do get it helps us a lot, because we do need to replenish our shelves, and to be able to provide the same amount of food that we do provide during the Christmas season. Our clients are hungry whether it’s summer or Christmas time. So, when we do get donations during the summertime it’s very beneficial.”

On average, the Lethbridge Food Bank serves between 650 and 700 households per month, or about 1,500 people. Forty per cent of those are children. And according to some reports, the number of seniors accessing food banks is also increasing.

If anyone wants to make a donation to the food bank, items like soups, cereals and canned meat are needed the most right now.

Also, donations of diapers, formula/baby food, personal toiletry items and some household products are appreciated.

Seasons runs two retirement communities in Lethbridge, along with 19 others across Alberta and in Ontario. In total, $40,000 was donated from all of the retirement communities to foodbanks throughout Alberta and Ontario.
