Early morning fatal house fire under investigation

LETHBRIDGE — A fatal house fire early Saturday (July 20) morning is being investigated by Lethbridge Police, Fire and Emergency Services are investigating a fatal house fire.

Fire fighters from all four stations were called out around 1:30-am to a home along the 600 block of 5 Street South. Crews found no visible fire with limited smoke coming from the door to the basement and when they entered the home they found heavy smoke with a small amount of flames.

The fire was quickly extinguished. A 50-year-old man was located inside and transported to Chinook Regional Hospital in life threatening condition. He later succumbed to his injuries. A dog was also found deceased inside the home.

Initial damage is estimated at about $200,000. No further information is expected until Monday.
