SOUTHERN ALBERTA – Three more counties in Southern Alberta are taking action against the rising risk of wildfires.

On Wednesday, July 31st, Parks Canada issued a fire advisory notice in Waterton Lakes National Park. This means that campfires are still allowed, but only in metal fire pits or boxes provided by the agency. Campers must purchase a fire permit before using fire pits.

The MD of Pincher Creek issued a fire advisory notice of their own on August 1st, saying that the hot and dry weather in combination with the seasonal curing of fuels has increased the risk of wildfires. They have not put any restrictions on burning yet, but are asking everyone to be careful.

Also on August 1st, Cypress County, which encompasses the areas surrounding Medicine Hat, has implemented a fire ban due to the “extreme fire hazard state due to lack of precipitation, dry and hot, windy conditions as well as to manage fire resources.” No fire permits will be issued.

The only flames that will still be allowed in Cypress County include internal household fire places, liquid fuel barbeques, stoves, fire rings, and wood pellet smokers.

Several other districts in Southern Alberta already have some level of burning restrictions in place. Visit AlbertaFireBans.ca to learn more.
