It`s ready – Taber Corn has arrived at local kiosks

LETHBRIDGE — How popular is Taber Corn? It`s so popular that potential customers are known to stalk (no pun intended) the corn trucks as they make their way from Taber corn fields to the sale kiosks that are set up around the region.

One seller, Ashlynn, noticed that on Friday (Aug 2) morning, a vehicle followed her down Highway-3 into Lethbridge and to her alloted kiosk at the CO-OP, across from Tim Horton’s on 43rd street south.

The news hound following her apologized if it looked odd, noting it was an opportunity too good to pass up.

Ashlynn was laughing, “Oh, this happens all the time – people want the corn and follow me to the kiosk to make sure they get it right away.”

Moments later, a pretty lady came running across the parking lot, excited to find a Taber Corn kiosk that was being stocked.

“We`re from Regina and we’re on our way to go camping in Fairmont, said Victoria Belsher, “I always hear about Taber Corn and I`m so excited that we`ll be able to buy some for our trip.”

Belsher and her husband Dallas had just bought a camper and were travelling with their mother, Judy O’Brian of Moose Jaw. Family members from Edmonton were meeting them in Fairmont and they made sure to buy several dozen cobs for sharing.

Victoria was already running down the ways they might cook the cobs. “We could do it in the husk ….or maybe just boil….oh, it will be good, no matter what.”

Taber Corn might be a week late but, but it’s worth the wait, as the cool nights and hot days have done the trick.

Ashlynn, who is selling for Johnson Farms, says they did a practice run-through on Thursday and now have kiosks not only in Lethbridge, but also Coaldale, Picture Butte, Claresholm, Pincher Creek and the Crowsnest Pass.

The kiosks should be selling regularly now and the current corn type being sold by Johnson Farms is “Peaches and Cream”.
