LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services responded to two incidents this week and have wrapped up their investigations.

Early in the morning of Thursday, August 8th, a 911 caller reported smoke and flames coming from the balcony of an apartment on the 300 block of Highlands Blvd.

23 firefighters from four stations responded and were able to extinguish the fire with minimal damages.

According to the investigation, the fire was caused by accident and was the result of a cigarette being improperly disposed.

“The home owner was not a smoker and cigarette may have originated from another unit,” reads a media release from the fire department.

Prior to this, at around 3:30 am on Sunday, August 4th, emergency personnel were called to a fire in the 2600 block of 2nd Ave North.

Upon the arrival of 17 firefighters, they found that an addition at the back of the building was fully engulfed in flames. It took around two hours to put it out.

No one was hurt, but two neighbouring businesses were damaged. The total damages from this incident are estimated at $400,000.

Investigators were unable to determine the cause of the fire and say it was tough to look into given how severely damaged the building and materials inside were.

The cause of the fire is classified as “undetermined”.
