Lethbridge-Medicine Hat jobless rate makes slight jump from June to July

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Unemployment numbers for July have been released, and the Lethbridge-Medicine Hat economic region’s rate took a small leap from June.

The jobless rate in the region was 6.4 percent last month, up slightly from 6.2 percent in June 2019.

Overall, Alberta’s unemployment rate for July was 7.0 percent, up from 6.6 percent the previous month.

Here’s how Alberta’s economic regions’ jobless rates broke down in July (rates from June in brackets):

· Edmonton: 7.7 percent (7.0)

· Red Deer: 7.4 percent (7.1)

· Calgary: 6.5 percent (6.5)

· Camrose – Drumheller: 6.4 percent (7.2)

· Lethbridge – Medicine Hat: 6.4 percent (6.2)

· Wood Buffalo – Cold Lake: 5.9 percent (5.8)

· Banff – Jasper – Rocky Mountain House and Athabasca – Grand Prairie – Peace River: 5.2 percent (5.7)

When it comes to age groups and gender, the jobless rate was listed at 7.0 percent in July for men and women aged 15 years and older. The rate for youths (male and female, age range 15 to 24) was at 12.9 percent last month. The rate for adults (men and women) aged 25 and older was 6.2 percent.

CANADA

The country-wide jobless rate was listed at 5.7 percent, up from 5.5 percent in June 2019.

The Canadian economy saw a loss of 24,200 jobs in July. That’s the weakest three-month stretch of job creation since early 2018.
