LETHBRIDGE, AB – At approximately 10:45 pm on Wednesday, August 14th, a police officer was doing patrols on the west side and exited the parking lot of the University Drive Alliance Church.

As the marked police cruiser proceeded eastbound on Columbia Boulevard, he struck a woman who was walking across the crosswalk at the intersection with Berkley Place.

Despite attempting to brake, the detachment says the officer was unable to avoid the collision.

β€œHe immediately exited his vehicle to render assistance and two other officers who had been in the same area, called for EMS and secured the scene,” reads a media release.

Paramedics attended to the 27-year-old victim, who suffered minor injuries. The woman chose to not go to the hospital and had friends take her home.

Following an investigation, the officer was issued a fine of $776 and four demerit points under the Traffic Safety Act for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
